Boothbay Harbor redux

I am back in Boothbay Harbor.

Bree and Brian came up to visit and for a short vacation before starting school. Of course, the first priority became having a true Maine lobster dinner.

Our first full day was spent whale watching. The trip started with a brief sighting of a Minke whale but most of our time was spent staring out to sea, hoping to spot a spout.

A bit later we saw a big finback whale - and then a calf! We stayed with them for a number of dives, each about 8 or 9 minutes long as they were feeding.

The calf seemed to be curious about us. It came close to the boat and, though it remained underwater, rolled on its side, showing its white belly. To us it was an aqua patch in the otherwise dark blue-grey water.

At one point, the calf was on the surface and rolled on its side away from us, giving us a view of half of its flukes. Our naturalist/guide said that was very rare behavior.

Our plans for the nex few days? In a word - LOBSTER!

Looks like a lot of fun. One thing I have not done yet is go on a whale watching excursion. Something to add to my list of things to do!
